what the indicator detects
range detector searches for market areas where price is moving inside a controlled box instead of trending aggressively. a valid range is built from three main conditions:
price must stay contained between a top and bottom boundary
the height of the box must remain reasonable compared to atr
the structure must last long enough to confirm consolidation

this helps understand whether the market is compressing tightly or building a wider consolidation structure. a tight range can be useful for breakout preparation, while a wider range can be useful for mean reversion, liquidity sweeps, and boundary reactions.
multi-timeframe detection
one of the most important features is the detection timeframe input.
by default, the detection timeframe is empty. this means the indicator uses the current chart timeframe.
for stronger structure, you can select a higher timeframe.
examples:
on a 5 minute chart, set detection timeframe to 1h to see larger intraday ranges
on a 15 minute chart, set detection timeframe to 4h to track stronger session structures
on a 1h chart, set detection timeframe to 1d to follow major daily compression zones
this is useful because a range detected on a higher timeframe is generally more important than a small range detected only on the chart timeframe.
when using mtf, the range engine runs directly on the selected detection timeframe. this means the boxes are not simply visual approximations from the lower timeframe. the range logic is calculated from the chosen timeframe structure.
how to use mtf correctly
for scalping, use a chart timeframe such as 1m, 3m, or 5m, then set the detection timeframe to 15m, 30m, or 1h.
for intraday trading, use a chart timeframe such as 5m, 15m, or 30m, then set the detection timeframe to 1h or 4h.
for swing trading, use a chart timeframe such as 1h or 4h, then set the detection timeframe to daily or weekly.
the higher the detection timeframe, the fewer ranges will appear, but the zones usually become more meaningful.
basic trading workflow

when a range appears, price is currently moving inside a consolidation box. the top acts as upper range resistance, the bottom acts as lower range support, and the midline represents equilibrium.
4. study price behavior inside the box
near the top of the range, traders often watch for rejection, failed breakouts, or liquidity sweeps.
near the bottom of the range, traders often watch for absorption, failed breakdowns, or reversal behavior.
near the midline, price is usually less attractive because it is balanced between both sides.
5. wait for breakout confirmation
breakout markers appear only when price closes beyond the range boundary with the selected atr buffer.
a break above the range suggests upside expansion.
a break below the range suggests downside expansion.
the breakout buffer helps reduce false breaks by requiring extra distance beyond the range boundary.

defines the maximum allowed range height in atr units. if the box becomes too wide, the structure is no longer treated as a clean range.

The score decides whether a setup is worth taking; the directional bias decides which way; the levels frame the trade. In validation, high-scored ranges broke cleaner and counter-bias breaks failed more often — so play them differently.
1) Trade-With Breakout (the primary play) — use on STRONG / ELITE zones (≥7) that break with their bias
Best when a range is rated STRONG or ELITE and the breakout fires in the same direction the ▲/▼ bias predicted.
Wait for a confirmed close beyond the Buy-Stop (long) or Sell-Stop (short) line — not a single wick.
Confirmation is strongest when the break direction matches the zone's directional bias (the ~77–81% edge).
Entry: on the close beyond the stop level, or on a retest of the broken edge (broken top flips to support; broken bottom flips to resistance).
Stop: the projected SL (opposite range edge / zone mid / ATR — your choice).

Overview
Smooths Trend Breaker is a trend identification and entry timing tool that combines an adaptive ATR-based supertrend, a higher timeframe EMA trend filter, volume confirmation, an RSI gate, a price compression range detector, and FVG-gated star candlestick pattern recognition. Each component was chosen to address a specific weakness in standalone supertrend systems — noise in choppy markets, late entries, and signals that contradict the larger trend — and all components work together as a single decision framework rather than as separate overlapping indicators.
Component Methodology
Adaptive Supertrend Engine
The core engine uses an ATR-based supertrend calculation. True Range is computed on each bar as the maximum of the current high-low range, the absolute distance from the prior close to the current high, and the absolute distance from the prior close to the current low. ATR is then derived using Wilder's smoothing method — a modified exponential moving average with a smoothing factor of 1/N — rather than a simple average, which gives more weight to recent volatility while maintaining memory of past conditions.
The upper and lower bands are calculated as the midpoint of the bar's high-low range plus or minus the ATR multiplied by a user-defined multiplier. Bands are then locked directionally — the lower band can only move upward and the upper band can only move downward — preventing the line from retreating when price moves against the trend. The trend direction flips only when a closing price crosses the opposite band, not on intrabar wicks, ensuring signals are close-confirmed.
Rather than using fixed ATR settings across all timeframes, the indicator auto-selects ATR length and multiplier based on the chart's timeframe in seconds. Shorter timeframes receive a shorter ATR period and higher multiplier to account for proportionally larger noise relative to signal. Longer timeframes receive a longer period and lower multiplier to avoid over-sensitivity on slower-moving instruments. This eliminates the need to manually adjust parameters when switching timeframes.
Higher Timeframe EMA Filter
When enabled, the indicator uses `request.security()` to retrieve a 50-period EMA from a higher timeframe selected automatically based on the chart timeframe — for example a 15-minute EMA is referenced when viewing a 5-minute chart, and a 4-hour EMA is referenced when viewing a 1-hour chart. A Buy label is only confirmed when price closes above this EMA and a Sell label is only confirmed when price closes below it, aligning entries with the larger structural trend.
Volume Confirmation
The volume filter computes a 20-bar simple moving average of volume. A signal is confirmed only when the flip bar's volume exceeds this average by a user-defined threshold, defaulting to 1.2 times the average. This filters out supertrend flips that occur on low-participation bars, which have historically higher failure rates.
RSI Gate
A 14-period RSI using Wilder's smoothing is computed on each bar. Buy signals are blocked when RSI exceeds a user-defined overbought level (default 70) and Sell signals are blocked when RSI falls below a user-defined oversold level (default 30). This prevents chasing exhausted moves at extremes.
Range Breaker
The Range Breaker compares the current N-bar rolling range (highest high minus lowest low) against the prior N-bar rolling range from the equivalent lookback window shifted N bars back. When the current range is less than a defined ratio of the prior range — meaning price has compressed significantly relative to its recent volatility — a consolidation zone is declared. Horizontal lines are drawn at the highest high and lowest low of the active zone and extend forward with the current bar. When a closing price breaks outside either level the zone is sealed and a breakout marker fires.
Star Pattern Detection with FVG Gate
Morning Star, Morning Doji Star, Evening Star, and Evening Doji Star patterns are detected using strict 3-candle criteria. The first candle must be a strong directional bar with a body filling at least 50% of its range. The middle candle — the star — must have a body of 25% or less of its range and a total range smaller than 80% of the first candle's body. The confirmation candle must be directionally opposite to the first candle with a body filling at least 40% of its range, closing past the midpoint of the first candle's body.
Additionally, a Fair Value Gap check is applied to the candle immediately before the star. A bearish FVG exists when the high of bar N is below the low of bar N+2, creating a downward price gap. A bullish FVG exists when the low of bar N is above the high of bar N+2, creating an upward price gap. An Inverse FVG check scans back 45 bars for a prior FVG zone whose price range overlaps with the pre-star candle, indicating price has returned to fill an old imbalance. If neither an FVG nor an IFVG is present on the candle before the star, the pattern does not fire regardless of candle structure. This ensures every star signal is anchored to a real price imbalance.
How to Use It
The highest probability setups occur when the supertrend line has already established direction, the range detector is not showing an active chop zone, and a signal fires with volume and HTF agreement. The Range Breaker lines are a caution flag — while they are active and unbroken, the supertrend will produce lower quality signals due to market compression. The star patterns provide a precision entry trigger that can be used to time entries at reversal points, particularly when a star fires near an active Range High or Range Low level.
Trend continuation
Wait for a pullback toward the supertrend line, then enter when the next Buy or Sell label prints in the direction of the established trend.
Breakout entries
When a range zone has been active for several bars and the supertrend is already pointing in one direction, a range breakout marker firing in that same direction is a high-quality entry trigger.
Star entries
A star pattern firing at or near a Range High or Range Low, with the supertrend already in agreement, represents the highest confluence setup available in the indicator.
What to avoid
Do not enter trend signals while a range zone is active with no breakout. Do not take signals that contradict the HTF EMA. Do not enter late into an extended trend where price is far from the supertrend line.
Settings
ATR Length and Multiplier auto-scale by timeframe but can be manually overridden. Volume threshold multiplier defaults to 1.2× the 20-bar average. RSI overbought and oversold levels default to 70 and 30. Range sensitivity has three modes controlling lookback period, compression ratio, and minimum bar count. Past zones to display defaults to 5, maximum 20.

Prior Day Range Box plots the previous trading day’s high and low directly on the current chart and displays that range as a visual box with optional reference lines. The script pulls the prior day’s high and low from the daily timeframe, then projects those levels onto the active chart so traders can track how current price behaves around important higher-timeframe levels.
At the start of each new trading day, the indicator creates a new prior day range using the previous day’s high and low. A box can be drawn between those levels to clearly show the full prior day range, while separate horizontal lines mark the prior day high and prior day low. These levels are widely used by intraday traders as key areas for support, resistance, breakout confirmation, rejection, and liquidity interaction.
An optional midpoint line can also be displayed. This line marks the 50% level of the prior day’s range and can serve as an added reference for balance, mean reversion, or directional bias during the session.
The script also includes an optional historical lookback mode. When enabled, it can display prior day range levels from multiple past sessions, making it easier to study how price reacts to historical daily ranges over time. The number of displayed lookback days can be adjusted to fit the user’s preference.
All visual elements are customizable. Users can choose whether to show the range box, enable the midpoint, extend the prior day high and low across the chart, display historical lookback days, and adjust the colors and line width to match their chart setup.

What does this indicator do?
Think of it like setting a tripwire on the market. Every trading day, the market opens and establishes a range during the first minutes — this is the Opening Range.
ORB watches two windows for you, records the highest and lowest prices within each, and then tells you the moment price breaks out of those levels. That breakout is often the start of a directional move — and that's when you want to pay attention.
Getting Started
Set the Timezone to match your chart's timezone.
What You'll See on the Chart
During the session windows: A teal shaded box appears during the AM session, growing in real-time as the high and low develop. An orange shaded box does the same during the PM session.
After each session ends: Dashed horizontal lines extend to the right from the final High and Low — these are your breakout levels. Price labels appear showing the exact High and Low values.
When price breaks out from the range: A teal triangle (▲ or ▼) appears if price crosses an AM level. An orange triangle (▲ or ▼) appears if price crosses a PM level. These triangles only appear during the valid time window — you won't see stale signals from yesterday's range, and AM signals disappear once the PM session begins.

When Do Alerts Actually Fire?
This is the most important thing to understand. The indicator is not just checking "did price cross a level?" — it also checks when the cross happens:

AM alerts only fire between AM End and PM Start (same day). Once the PM session begins, AM signals shut off.
PM alerts only fire after PM End until the end of the trading day.
Nothing carries over to the next day. Yesterday's levels won't trigger today's alerts.
This means you only get signals when they're fresh and relevant.

"The dashed lines are too short / too long"
→ Adjust Extend levels (bars). Shorter timeframes need more bars to cover the same time span.
"I see a red error banner"
→ Your session times are invalid. Check that: (1) each Start is before its End, and (2) AM End doesn't overlap with PM Start.
"I don't see any triangles / alerts"
→ Make sure price actually crossed the level during the valid window. If the cross happened during the session itself or after hours, it won't count — by design.

What sets this indicator apart from others
In other ORB indicators, the opening range must be a multiple of the current chart's timeframe, restricting users on the intraday timeframes that can be used. E.g. if the user is using the 15 minutes opening range, they are restricted to use the 1, 3, 5, 15 minute(s) chart.
This indicator gives the user the flexibility to set any opening range above 1 min on any intraday timeframe. E.g. if the user is using the 15 minutes opening range, they are free to use any intraday timeframe on their chart, such as 1 hour or 2 hours chart.
