Synthetic IV Rank [UAlgo]Synthetic IV Rank is a volatility analysis indicator that creates a practical proxy for IV Rank when direct options implied volatility data is not available. Instead of reading an options chain, the script estimates a synthetic volatility series from price action using a Yang Zhang style historical volatility model, then normalizes that value into a 0 to 100 rank across a user defined lookback window.
This makes the tool especially useful for traders who want an IV Rank style workflow on instruments or markets where true implied volatility is unavailable, limited, or inconsistent. The indicator can be used on stocks, indices, forex, commodities, and crypto, with a dedicated Crypto Mode for annualization based on 365 days.
The script is built as a separate pane indicator and focuses on clear regime awareness. It plots a smooth IV Rank line, adds visual threshold references for high and low volatility zones, and shows a live status label on the most recent bar with both the current rank and the raw synthetic volatility value. Important note: This is a synthetic IV Rank approximation based on historical price volatility. It is not a substitute for true options implied volatility from an options chain.

The indicator estimates volatility from price data using a Yang Zhang style framework, then converts that estimate into an IV Rank style percentile scale. This gives users an IV Rank like signal even when broker feeds do not provide options implied volatility.

The script computes IV Rank by comparing the current synthetic volatility value against the lowest and highest values over the selected lookback period. If the range collapses to zero, the script safely assigns a neutral rank of 50 instead of causing a division issue.
This improves reliability in flat or low variance periods.

The indicator includes a strong visual layout designed for quick interpretation:
A main IV Rank line
A mid reference line at 50
High and low threshold markers at 80 and 20
Gradient fills that visually emphasize extreme zones
This helps users recognize volatility regime shifts at a glance.
🔸 6) Dynamic Last Bar Status Labels
On the latest bar, the script prints a compact status label that shows:
Current IV Rank value
Regime label such as EXTREME FEAR, COMPLACENCY, or NEUTRAL
It also adds a secondary information label showing the raw Yang Zhang synthetic volatility percentage. This gives both normalized context and raw measurement at the same time.
🔸 7) Practical Regime Classification
The script uses simple but effective thresholds for regime tagging:
Above 80 signals elevated volatility conditions
Below 20 signals compressed volatility conditions
Between 20 and 80 is treated as neutral
These thresholds align with common IV Rank style interpretation used in discretionary and systematic workflows.
🔹 Calculations
1) Engine Initialization
On the first bar, the script initializes the custom volatility engine and stores:
The Yang Zhang calculation length
The IV Rank lookback window
The annualization factor based on asset class mode
If Crypto Mode is enabled, the annual factor uses the square root of 365. Otherwise it uses the square root of 252.
2) Synthetic Volatility Source Series
The indicator computes a Yang Zhang style historical volatility estimate from OHLC data. The model combines multiple variance components so it can capture more market behavior than a simple close to close volatility series.
The script calculates:
A first variance component labeled as overnight in the comments
An open to close variance component
A Rogers Satchell style intraday variance component from high, low, open, and close relationships
3) First Variance Component (Commented as Overnight)
In the current implementation, the first component is built from the logarithmic return of close / close , and its rolling variance is measured over the user defined length.
This is important to note because the code comments describe an overnight style component, while the actual formula uses consecutive closes in the current version.
4) Open to Close Variance Component
The script computes the logarithmic open to close return log(close / open) and then applies a rolling variance over the selected length. This measures intrabar movement relative to the bar open.
5) Rogers Satchell Intraday Variance Component
To improve intraday variance estimation, the script calculates a Rogers Satchell style daily variance term using four logarithmic relationships derived from high, low, open, and close. It then smooths this with a rolling simple average across the same volatility length.
This component is useful because it incorporates more intrabar range information than a simple close based measure.
6) Yang Zhang Weighting Factor
The script computes a weighting coefficient k that depends on the volatility length. This weight balances the contribution of the open to close variance and the Rogers Satchell component in the final combined variance.
The implementation follows the standard Yang Zhang style weighting formula shown in the script comments.
7) Combined Synthetic Volatility and Annualization
After computing the variance components, the script combines them into a single Yang Zhang style variance estimate, takes the square root to obtain volatility, and annualizes the result with the engine annual factor. The final synthetic volatility value is expressed as a percentage.
In practical terms, this output is the raw volatility series that the script later converts into Synthetic IV Rank.
8) IV Rank Calculation
The IV Rank logic measures where the current synthetic volatility sits relative to its historical range over the selected lookback:
It finds the lowest synthetic volatility in the lookback window
It finds the highest synthetic volatility in the lookback window
It scales the current value to a 0 to 100 rank
If the lookback range is flat, the script assigns 50.0 as a neutral fallback.
This normalization step is what makes the output behave like an IV Rank style regime indicator rather than a raw volatility plot.
9) Regime State Classification
On the latest bar, the script assigns a text state from the current IV Rank:
EXTREME FEAR when rank is above 80
COMPLACENCY when rank is below 20
NEUTRAL otherwise
The label color also changes with the state, which improves visual scanning.
10) Visual Layer Logic
The visualization includes:
A plotted IV Rank line
Hidden boundary plots for fill anchors
Visible threshold markers at 80 and 20
A midpoint reference line at 50
Gradient fills for high volatility and low volatility zones
The fill logic visually intensifies as the IV Rank moves deeper into an extreme zone, helping users identify volatility compression and expansion phases quickly.
11) What This Indicator Represents in Practice
This script is best understood as a normalized historical volatility regime tool designed to mimic the workflow of IV Rank when direct implied volatility data is not available. It is excellent for context filtering and regime awareness, but it should not be interpreted as a true options market implied volatility feed. Indicator

Contraharmonic mean is literally a weighted mean where each value is weighted by itself.

Now let me explain to you why contraharmonic weighting is really so fundamental in two ways: observation how the industry (prolly unknowably) converged to this method, and the real mathematical explanation why things are this way.
How it works in the industry.
In indexes like TVC:SPX or TVC:DJI the individual components (stocks) are weighted by market capitalization. This market cap is made of two components: number of shares outstanding and the actual price of the stock. While the number of shares holds the same over really long periods of time and changes rarely by corporate actions , the prices change all the time, so market cap is in fact almost purely based on prices itself. So when they weight index legs by market cap, it really means they weight it by stock prices. That’s the observation: even tho I never dem saying they do contraharmonic weighting, that’s what happens in reality.
Natural explanation
Now the main part: how the universe works. If you build a logical sequence of how information ‘gradually’ combines, you have this:
Suppose you have the one last datapoint of each of 4 different assets;
The next logical step is to combine these datapoints somehow in pairs. Pairs are created only as ratios , this reveals relationships between components, this is the only step where these fundamental operations are meaningful, they lose meaning with 3+ components. This way we will have 16 pairs: 4 of them would be 1s, 6 real ratios, and 6 more inverted ratios of these;
Then the next logical step is to combine all the pairs (not the initial single assets) all together. Naturally this is done via matrices, by constructing a 4x4 design matrix where each cell will be one of these 16 pairs. That matrix will have ones in the main diagonal (because these would be smth like ES/ES, NQ/NQ etc). Other cells will be actual ratios, like ES/NQ, RTY/YM etc;
Then the native way to compress and summarize all this structure is to do eigendecomposition . The only eigenvector that would be meaningful in this case is the principal eigenvector, and its loadings would be what we were hunting for. We can multiply each asset datapoint by corresponding loading, sum them up and have one single index value, what we were aiming for;
Now the main catch: turns out using these principal eigenvector loadings mathematically is Exactly the same as simply calculating contraharmonic weights of those 4 initial assets. We’re done here.
For the sceptics, no other way of constructing the design matrix other than with ratios would result in another type of a defined mean. Filling that design matrix with ratios Is the only way to obtain a meaningful defined mean, that would also work with negative numbers. I’m skipping a couple of details there tbh, but they don’t really matter (we don’t need log-space, and anyways the idea holds even then). But the core idea is this: only contraharmonic mean emerges there, no other mean ever does.
Finally, how to use the thing:
Good news we don't use contraharmonic mean itself because we need an internals of it: actual weights of components that make this contraharmonic mean, (so we can follow it with our position sizes). This actually allows us to also use these weights but not for addition, but for subtraction. So, the script has 2 modes (examples would follow):
Addition: the main one, allows you to make indexes, portfolios, baskets, groups, whatever you call it. The script will simply sum the weighted legs;
Subtraction: allows you to make spreads, residual spreads etc. Important: the script will subtract all the symbols From the first one. So if the first we have 3 symbols: YM, ES, RTY, the script will do YM - ES - RTY, weights would be applied to each.
At the top tight corner of the script you will see a lil table with symbols and corresponding weights you wanna trade: these are ‘already’ adjusted for point value of each leg, you don’t need to do anything, only scale them all together to meet your risk profile.
Symbols have to be added the way the default ones are added, one line : one symbol.

Script also outputs inferred volume delta, inferred volume and inferred tick count calculated with the same method. You can use them in further calculations.

Synthetic Price Action GeneratorNOTICE:
First thing you need to know, it "DOES NOT" reflect the price of the ticker you will load it on. THIS IS NOT AN INDICATOR FOR TRADING! It's a developer tool solely generating random values that look exactly like the fractals we observe every single day. This script's generated candles are as fake as the never ending garbage news cycles we are often force fed and expected to believe by using carefully scripted narratives peddled as hypnotic truth to psychologically and emotionally influence you to the point of control by coercion and subjugation. I wanted to make the script's synthetic nature very clear using that analogy, it's dynamically artificial. Do not accidentally become disillusioned by this scripts values, make trading decisions from it, and lastly don't become victim to predatory media magic ministry parrots with pretty, handsome smiles, compelling you to board their ferris wheel of fear. Now, on to the good stuff...
BACKSTORY:
Occasionally I find myself in situations where I have to build analyzers in Pine to actually build novel quantitative analytic indicators and tools worthy of future use. These analyzers certainly don't exist on this platform, but usually are required to engineer and tweak algorithms of the highest quality with the finest computational caliber. I have numerous other synthesizers to publish besides this one.
For many reasons, I needed a synthetic environment to utilize the analyzers I built in Pine, to even pursue building some exotic indicators and algorithms. Pine doesn't allow sourcing of tuples. Not to mention, I required numerous Pine advancements to make long held dreams into tangible realities. Many Pine upgrades have arrived and MANY, MANY more are in need of implementation for all. Now that I have this, intending to use it in the future often when in need, you can now use it too. I do anticipate some skilled Pine poets will employ this intended handy utility to design and/or improved indicators for trading.
ORIGIN:
This was inspired by the brilliance from the world renowned ALGOmist John F. Ehlers, but it's taken on a completely alien form from its original DNA. Browsing on the internet for something else, I came across an article with a small code snippet, and I remembered an old wish of mine. I have long known that by flipping back and forth on specific tickers and timeframes in my Watchlist is not the most efficient way to evaluate indicators in multiple theatres of price action. I realized, I always wanted to possess and use this sort of tool, so... I put it into Pine form, but now have decided to inject it with Pine Script steroids. The outcome is highly mutable candle formations in a reusable mutagenic package, observable above and masquerading as genuine looking price candles.
OVERVIEW:
I guess you could call it a price action synthesizer, but I entitled it "Synthetic Price Action Generator" for those who may be searching for such a thing. You may find this more useful on the All or 5Y charts initially to witness indication from beginning (barstate.isfirst === barindex==0) to end (last_bar_index), but you may also use keyboard shortcuts + + to view the earliest plottable bars on any timeframe. I often use that keyboard shortcut to qualify an indicator through the entirety of it's runtime.
A lot can go wrong unexpectedly with indicator initialization, and you will never know it if you don't inspect it. Many recursively endowed Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) Filters can initialize with unintended results that minutely ring in slightly erroneous fashion for the entire runtime, beginning to end, causing deviations from "what should of been..." values with false signals. Looking closely at spg(), you will recognize that 3 EMAs are employed to manage and maintain randomness of CLOSE, HIGH, and LOW. In fact, any indicator's barindex==0 initialization can be inspected with the keyboard shortcuts above. If you see anything obviously strange in an authors indicator, please contact the developer if possible and respectfully notify them.
PURPOSE:
The primary intended application of this script, is to offer developers from advanced to even novice skill levels assistance with building next generation indicators. Mostly, it's purpose is for testing and troubleshooting indicators AND evaluating how they perform in a "manageable" randomized environment. Some times indicators flake out on rare but problematic price fluctuations, and this may help you with finding your issues/errata sooner than later. While the candles upon initial loading look pristine, by tweaking it to the minval/maxval parameters limits OR beyond with a few code modifications, you can generate unusual volatility, for instance... huge wicks. Limits of minval= and maxval= of are by default set to a comfort zone of operation. Massive wicks or candle bodies will undoubtedly affect your indication and often render them useless on tickers that exhibit that behavior, like WGMCF intraday currently.
Copy/paste boundaries are provided for relevant insertion into another script. Paste placement should happen at the very top of a script. Note that by overwriting the close, open, high, etc... values, your compiler will give you generous warnings of "variable shadowing" in abundance, but this is an expected part of applying it to your novel script, no worries. plotcandle() can be copied over too and enabled/disabled in Settings->Style. Always remember to fully remove this scripts' code and those assignments properly before actual trading use of your script occurs, AND specifically when publishing. The entirety of this provided code should never, never exist in a published indicator.
OTHER INTENTIONS:
Even though these are 100% synthetic generated price points, you will notice ALL of the fractal pseudo-patterns that commonly exist in the markets, are naturally occurring with this generator too. You can also swiftly immerse yourself in pattern recognition exercises with increased efficiency in real time by clicking any SPAG Setting in focus and then using the up/down arrow keys. I hope I explained potential uses adequately...
On a personal note, the existence of fractal symmetry often makes me wonder, do we truly live in a totality chaotic universe or is it ordered mathematically for some outcomes to a certain extent. I think both. My observations, it's a pre-deterministic reality completely influenced by infinitesimal amounts of sentient free will with unimaginable existing and emerging quantities. Some how an unknown mysterious mechanism governing the totality of universal physics and mathematics counts this 100.0% flawlessly and perpetually. Anyways, you can't change the past that long existed before your birth or even yesterday, but you can choose to dream, create, and forge the future into your desires and hopes. As always, shite always happens when your not looking for it. What you choose to do after stepping in it unintentionally... is totally up to you. :) Maybe this tool and tips provided will aid you in not stepping in an algo cachucha up to your ankles somehow.

Random Synthetic Asset GenerationThis script generates pseudo-random asset data . Due to the nature of the random generator, it is impossible to use this indicator as input for other indicators because the instance of the script that the indicator is applied to will automatically be different from the instance that is plotted on the chart. Therefore, the idea is to use this script in other scripts (to make it possible to backtest on random data, for example).
The script has four main input parameters.
Random Number Generator Method: It supports two methods for generating the pseudo-random numbers (one by Ricardo Santos and one by Wichmann-Hill).
Seed: You can specify the seed to use. Each unique seed will generate a unique set of pseudo-random data.
Intrabar Volatility: This basically sets how volatile the generated wicks will be (0 = no wicks).
Price Multiplier: This is just a multiplier for the generated price data, so that you can scale up or down the generated price data.
You can also change the colors of the bars.
In addition to this, the indicator also generates random volume. In order to make it possible to show both volume and price, you need to have two identical instances of the indicator. One on the chart, and one in its own panel. Then, go into the Style tab in the indicator settings on the instance in the panel. Untick Up-Candles and Down-Candles boxes, and tick the Volume box.
In a similar manner, you can also plot the true range data and the candle change data as well, by ticking one of those boxes instead.

Background
John F. Ehlers create Synthetic Prices Using Random Numbers with Memory in his "Cycle Analytics for Traders" chapter 8 on 2013.
Function
Peter Swerling is best known for the class of statistically “fluctuating target” scattering models he developed in the early 1950s to characterize the performance of pulsed radar systems, referred to as Swerling targets. He noted that the return radar echoes were noisy because of semirandom reflections from different parts of the aircraft because of the changing aspect of aircraft relative to the radar transmitter. There were different kinds of fluctuations due to target shape and size, radar wavelength, and so on. Some fluctuations would occur pulse to pulse, and others would vary more slowly, such as from scan to scan of the antenna. In fact, his early work led to the design of modern stealthy aircraft. The noisy radar echoes were successfully modeled as a constant plus a random number with memory. In terms recognized by traders, the echoes were modeled as an exponential moving average (EMA) passes numbers. The time constant of the EMA was different for the various models, and more complex models included several EMAs. The Swerling model is entirely consistent with the 1/F α spectral model that uses random inputs with long-term memory.
Since there has been a mountain of opinion regarding the randomness of the market, it is reasonable to apply a Swerling-like model toward the generation of synthetic data. The result is subjective, but appears to be a reasonable approximation to real market movement. There is no relationship between the real prices and the synthetic prices. Since random numbers are used, the display will change every time the indicator is computed. Since synthetic prices created by taking an EMA of random numbers are a reasonable approximation to real market prices, the prices can be viewed as random numbers with memory. A logical extension is that we can gain insight into market activity by correlating current prices with prices in the recent history to take advantage of the memory part of the model. At least that was Dr. Ehlers premise.

Level 1 : interesting script snippets or distinctive improvement from classic indicators or strategy. Level 1 scripts can usually appear in more complex indicators as a function module or element.
Level 2 : composite indicator/strategy. By selecting or combining several independent or dependent functions or sub indicators in proper way, the composite script exhibits a resonance phenomenon which can filter out noise or fake trading signal to enhance trading confidence level.
Level 3 : comprehensive indicator/strategy. They are simple trading systems based on my strategies. They are commonly containing several or all of entry signal, close signal, stop loss, take profit, re-entry, risk management, and position sizing techniques.
