The IV Rank & Percentile Suite provides the volatility context options traders need to time entries. It calculates two complementary metrics—IV Rank and IV Percentile—using historical volatility as a proxy, then displays clear visual zones to identify favorable conditions for premium selling strategies.
Stop guessing if volatility is "high" or "low." This indicator tells you exactly where current volatility sits relative to recent history.
The Two Metrics Explained
IV Rank (0-100) Measures where current volatility sits within its 52-week high-low range.
IV Rank = (Current HV - 52w Low) / (52w High - 52w Low) × 100
70 means current volatility is 70% of the way between the yearly low and high
Sensitive to extreme spikes (a single high reading affects the range)
IV Percentile (0-100) Measures what percentage of days in the lookback period had lower volatility than today.
IV Percentile = (Days with lower HV / Total days) × 100
70 means volatility was lower than today on 70% of days in the past year
More stable, less affected by outlier spikes
Why Both?
IV Rank reacts faster to volatility changes. IV Percentile is more stable and statistically robust. When both agree (e.g., both above 50), you have stronger confirmation. Divergence between them can signal transitional periods.
Zone System
The indicator divides readings into three zones:
Zone ------- Default Range ---- Meaning ------------------ Premium Selling
🟢 High ≥ 50 Elevated volatility Favorable
🟡 Neutral 25-50 Normal volatility Selective
🔴 Low ≤ 25 Compressed volatility Avoid
An additional Extreme threshold (default 75) highlights prime conditions when volatility is significantly elevated.
Zone thresholds are fully customizable in settings.
How to Use It
For Premium Sellers (Iron Condors, Credit Spreads, Strangles)
Wait for IV Rank to enter the green zone (≥50)
Confirm IV Percentile agrees (also elevated)
Enter premium selling positions when both metrics align
Avoid initiating new positions when in the red zone
For Premium Buyers (Long Options, Debit Spreads)
Low IV Rank/Percentile means cheaper options
Red zone can favor directional debit strategies
Avoid buying premium when both metrics are in the green zone
General Principle:
Sell premium when volatility is high (it tends to revert to mean). Buy premium when volatility is low (if you have a directional thesis).

Trading Days/Year — 252 for stocks, 365 for crypto

IV Rank Lookback — Period for high/low range (default: 252 = 1 year)

Extreme High — Threshold for "prime" conditions alert (default: 75)

Technical Notes
Volatility Calculation Method
This indicator uses close-to-close historical volatility as an IV proxy:
Calculate log returns: ln(Close / Previous Close)
Take standard deviation over HV Period
Annualize: multiply by √(Trading Days)
This method correlates well with implied volatility for most liquid instruments. On highly liquid options underlyings (SPY, QQQ, major stocks), HV and IV tend to move together, making this a reliable proxy for IV Rank analysis.
Non-Repainting
All calculations use confirmed bar data. Values are fixed once a bar closes.
Lookback Requirement
The indicator needs sufficient history to calculate accurately. For a 252-day lookback, ensure your chart has at least 300+ bars of data.

High-volume stocks: AAPL, TSLA, NVDA, AMD, META
Timeframe: Daily (recommended), Weekly for longer-term view
The indicator works on any instrument but is most meaningful on underlyings with active options markets.
Important Notes
⚠️ This indicator uses historical volatility as a proxy for implied volatility. While HV and IV are correlated, they are not identical. For precise IV data, consult your options broker's platform.

Multiple Percentile Ranks (up to 5 sources at a time)This indicator is a visual percentile rank indicator that can display 1 to 5 sources at one time.
The options:
“Sources”
Choose the number of sources you would like to display. The minimum is 1, the maximum is 5.
“Label percent position”
The label for the current percentage of where the source candle ranks.
“Label position”
This displays the source/s you’ve selected, and the chosen bottom rank % and top rank %.
“Label text size”
Displays the text size of all labels.
“Display current % labels”
Switches the labels on/off only for the current percentage rank of each source.

Close: closing price
Close Percent: close percentage from previous close
Dollar Value: volume * (high * low * close / 3)
EOM: Ease of Movement: how much volume it takes to move the price in a certain direction
OBV: On-Balance Volume
RANGE: percentage range of the close price
RSI: Relative Strength Index
RVI: Relative Vigor Index
Time Close: if you select the 1 second timeframe it will provide the gap of time between each 1 second close
Volume: each bar’s volume
Volume (MA): volume moving average
Source # where # is the number of the source. Selects the source you’d like.
Ma Length is the number of previous candles to consider when calculating the moving average of the source. Note, the “MA Length” only applies to sources that have the “(MA)” at the end of their name.
Bottom % is the bottom percentage rank of the source you’ve selected. This is a filter to display the candle line graph in red once the percentage rank is equal to the percentage you’ve chosen or below.
Top % is the top percentage rank of the source you’ve selected. This is a filter to display the candle line graph in green once the percentage rank is equal to the percentage you’ve chosen or higher.
A simple example of how to use the indicator:
Select the dropdown menu for source 1 and select volume.
As the candles populate, it will look at previous candles and assign a percentage rank of where the candles are in relation to previous candles.
*Note, the way Tradingview works is it will populate the first candle the chart was active, and continue on. So, let’s say the 3rd candle was the highest volume day. This candle will show up as 100%. If the next day, the 4th candle has an even higher volume, it will show up as 100% also, the previous candles won’t “repaint” to other values and are instead set based on when they were confirmed. So, this indicator works best when there are a lot of previous candles to compare itself to.
To use the bottom % rank filter enter a percentage such as 5%. As it comes across a candle that is 5% or less compared to previous volume candles, then the line graph will shade in red.
The same can be said for the top % rank. So, if you want to see the line graph change to green when it comes across the top 99th percentile rank of volume bars, then set the top % rank to 1% and it will give you extremely high-volume bars in green instead of blue.

Weighted percentile nearest rankYo, posting it for the whole internet, took the whole day to find / to design the actual working solution for weighted percentile 'nearest rank' algorithm, almost no reliable info online and a lot of library-style/textbook-style solutions that don't provide on real world production level.
The principle:

3) say we wanna find 50th percentile, get a threshold value:

thres = weights_sum / 100 * n
7.5 = 15 / 100 * 50
4) iterate through weights_cum until you find a value that >= the threshold:

7 >= 7.5 ? nah
10 >= 7.5 ? aye
5) take the iteration index that resulted "aye", and find the data value with the same index, that's gonna be the resulting percentile.

This one is not an approximation, not an estimator, it's the actual weighted percentile nearest rank as it is.
I tested the thing extensively and it works perfectly.
For the skeptics, check lines 40, 41, 69 in the code, you can comment/uncomment dem to switch for unit (1) weights, resulting in the usual non-weighted percentile nearest rank that ideally matches the TV's built-in function.

What is Spearman rank correlation?
Spearman rank correlation, also known as Spearman coefficient is a formula used to identify the strength of the link between two datasets. This coefficient is a method that can be used to assess the strength of a relationship apart from the direction it takes. The formula, named after Charles Spearman, a mathematician, can only be used in circumstances where data can be categorized or put in order, for instance, the highest to the lowest.
For a better understanding of Spearman coefficient, it helps to get a sense of what monotonic function means. There’s a monotonic relationship under these circumstances:
– When the variable values rise together.
– When one variable value rises the other variable value lowers.
– The rate of movement of the variables need not necessarily be constant.
The Spearman correlation coefficient or rs, between +1 and -1, where +1 indicates a perfect strength between variables, while zero shows no association and -1 shows a perfect negative strength.
Spearman rank correlation theory:
A nonparametric (distribution-free) rank statistic proposed by Spearman in 1904 as a measure of the strength of the associations between two variables (Lehmann and D'Abrera 1998). The Spearman rank correlation coefficient can be used to give an R-estimate, and is a measure of monotone association that is used when the distribution of the data make Pearson's correlation coefficient undesirable or misleading.

Stochastic based on Closing Prices - Identify and Rank TrendsStochClose is a trend indicator that can be used on its own to measure trend strength, in a scan to rank a group of securities according to trend strength or as part of a trend following strategy. Moreover, it acts as a volatility-adjusted trend indicator that puts securities on an equal footing.
StochClose measures the location of the current close relative to the close-only high-low range over a given period of time. In contrast to the traditional Stochastic Oscillator, this indicator only uses closing prices. Traditional Stochastic uses intraday highs and lows to calculate the range. The focus on closing prices reduces signal noise caused by intraday highs and lows, and filters out errant or irrationally exuberant price spikes.
Here are some examples when the high or low was out of proportion and suspect. Perhaps most famously, there were errant spike lows in dozens of ETFs in August 2015 (XLK, IJR, ITB). There were other spikes in VMBS (October 2014), IJR (October 2008) and KRE (May 2011). Elsewhere, there were suspicious spikes in IEI (April 2020), CHD (March 2020), CCRN (March 2020) and FNB (March 2020)
The preferred setting to identify medium and long-term uptrends is 125 days with 5 days smoothing. 125 days covers around six months. Thus, StochClose(125,5) is a 5-day SMA of the 125-day Stochastic based on closing prices. Smoothing with the 5-day SMA introduces a little lag, but reduces whipsaws and signal noise.
StochClose fluctuates between 0 and 100 with 50 as the midpoint. Values above 80 indicate that the current price is near the high end of the 125-day range, while values below 20 indicate that price is near the low end of the range. For signals, a move above 60 puts the indicator firmly in the top half of the range and points to an uptrend. A move below 40 puts the indicator firmly in the bottom half of the range and points to a downtrend.
StochClose values can also be ranked to separate the leaders from the laggards. In contrast to Rate-of-Change and Percentage Above/Below a Moving Average, StochClose acts as a volatility-adjusted indicator that can identify trend strength or weakness. The Consumer Staples SPDR is unlikely to win in a Rate-of-Change contest with the Technology SPDR. However, it is just as easy for the Consumer Staples SPDR to get in the top of its range as it is for the Technology SPDR. StochClose puts securities on an equal footing.
StochClose measures trend direction and trend strength with one number. The indicator value tells us immediately if the security is trending higher or lower. Furthermore, we can compare this value against the values for other securities. Securities with higher StochClose values are stronger than those with lower values.
